Small Circles by Megan Duke

Small Circles is the story of four friends over four years of their young adult lives in Tennessee. Starting in their sophomore year at a boarding school and continuing through their freshman years at different universities, the friends face the same trials most teenagers face today, as well as a few other things. This inspiring story touches base with the struggles of defining oneself in spite of homosexuality, drug addiction, suicide, and heartbreak. Most of all it sends one message: it’s okay to be happy

My Review:

Five out of five stars!

Small Circles is an incredible book following the lives of four friends as they journey through high school and their first year of college. I was lucky enough to receive a free SIGNED copy of this beautiful book from Megan Duke and I am so grateful that I got a chance to read it. As you can see from the description, Small Circles “touches base with the struggles of defining oneself in spite of homosexuality, drug addiction, suicide, and heartbreak”. Paxton, Owen, Larson, and Jade are all loveable characters that you really relate to. Megan is able to successfully entwine their four perspectives into one beautiful stories that is bound to leave a lasting impression on readers.

What I really loved about this book is how real it is. Megan shows how overcoming addictions, depression, or bullying is a struggle. Most authors have their characters go through a hard time and then they live happily ever after when in reality that does not happen. Megan’s characters struggle to overcome their problems, sometimes they relapse, but it’s okay because they keep fighting. As someone who suffered through a (minor) phase of depression (I was never clinically depressed although I had to see a therapist), I really appreciate how Megan shows that even though it may be a difficult fight, it is worth it ans IT’S OKAY TO BE HAPPY.

Even though this book discussed serious issues it was still a happy book! I found myself giggling many times because there are so many funny and cute parts. As a reader, you get so wrapped up in this this world that you feel like you are part of the story. I felt that I was right there with the group of friends, encouraging them to keep fighting and to have fun. This is definitely a result of the flawless writing style.
